Car Wax or Ceramic Coating? - Best Car Protection

Is Car Wax or Ceramic Coating the superior method to protect my car?

Wax has been at the forefront of car paint protection for many years and continues to be a popular option for a high gloss, wet-look finish after car detailing. In recent times with the emergence of newer technologies ceramic coatings have become mainstream.

The ceramic coating looks to improve on wax by providing longer protection with the addition of shine and repelling properties. This new technology means many questions are being asked in regard to wax or ceramic coating.

Wax or Ceramic Coating? - The key differences

Wax can be excellent for somebody who would like a wet and reflective look which looks natural. Some specialty waxes such as carnauba can be tough to install because of its hardness but the results are worth it. The gloss levels in comparison to ceramic coatings are a level above as results can be highly reflective, providing a mirror finish with medium repelling power.

In contrast, ceramic coatings do provide reflective and glossy look, but it tends to be slightly less glossy than carnauba wax. It does, however, provide excellent protection and repels rain effectively when compared to wax. Ceramic coatings can provide from 6 months to 5 years’ worth of protection and is a stronger defence against bad car washing methods. Wax provides 3 to 12 months of protection but is not as resilient against bad car washing methods.

So, Is ceramic coating better than wax?

Both ceramic coating and carnauba wax can provide excellent gloss and protection but as per our above comparison of wax or ceramic, both have their own advantages.

We would recommend trying the cheaper option of wax first and if 6 months later you are not happy with the protection, then move on to ceramic coatings.

Whichever method is chosen, please remember the whole point of comparing carnauba wax or ceramic coatings is to find which option is better to maintain the protection and gloss of your vehicle. You must first ensure you are following the right methods of car regular car maintenance such as washing and drying. We recommend the two-bucket wash method to get the most value from your car once it has been detailed.
